Construction work on the Riedbahn

As part of the general refurbishment of the Riedbahn, numerous construction measures will be implemented in a bundle on the route between Frankfurt (Main) and Mannheim. The modernisation work will take place over a period of five months from 15 July to 14 December 2024. In addition to the renewal of a large number of tracks, points, overhead lines, bridges, level crossings, noise barriers and signalling technology, 20 stations along the route will also be extensively renovated as part of the construction work. The Riedbahn will be closed to train traffic for the entire period. In the meantime, however, an efficient traffic concept will ensure that travellers can continue to reach their destinations.

The Riedbahn is the railway line between Frankfurt (Main) Stadion and Mannheim Hauptbahnhof. Up to 300 trains travel along this busy, double-track corridor every day. This makes the Riedbahn one of the busiest railway lines in Germany. To ensure that its infrastructure remains efficient in the future and to reduce disruptions and the resulting delays, the Riedbahn is now undergoing a general overhaul. All necessary construction work on the line over the next few years will be bundled and implemented as a whole. Within five months, a wide range of facilities along the approximately 70-kilometre-long corridor will be modernised.

In addition to tracks, points and overhead lines, 20 stations are also being renovated as part of the general refurbishment of the Riedbahn. The aim is to improve the experience at and around the stations. In addition to measures on the platforms and entrances, the construction work also includes the station buildings, station forecourts and onward travel. When designing the stations along the Riedbahn, recurring colours and motifs will be used to create a connection between the stations. To make the platforms more comfortable, they will also be fitted with modern platform roofs, weather shelters, new benches and LED lighting as part of the construction work. In order to make it easier for persons with reduced mobility in particular to spend time at the stations and to travel, new wayfinding systems and lifts or ramps for accessibility to the stations will also be installed. Furthermore, facades, wall surfaces, ceilings, floor coverings, stairs and entrances are being modernised.

Restrictions on train services: line closure and replacement services

As part of the general renovation of the Riedbahn, the entire line will be closed from 15 July to 14 December 2024. This and the bundling of measures will enable the construction work to be completed more quickly than before. Train traffic on the Riedbahn and its secondary connections, the Main-Neckar-Bahn and the lines on the Mainz - Mannheim route will be significantly impaired during the period of the general refurbishment.

During the line closure, an efficient traffic concept with diversions and replacement services will ensure that travellers can continue to reach their destination reliably. The live departure and arrival times as well as the location of the replacement transport stop at a station can be viewed on the respective station details page on bahnhof.de. To do this, proceed as follows:

  1. Use the station search to find and select your desired station.
  2. On the station details page that is then displayed, you can then click on the tile "departure and arrival" in the "mobility" section to obtain real-time information on the departing and arriving means of transport at the station. If you click on the "replacement service" tile, you will be shown the location of replacement service stop and the route to it for the selected station.
